I first met Az in the late 1980s when he was a check airman at FSI. As a young pilot, I was a bit intimidated—he typed me in both the G1159 and CL60—but what stood out was his unwavering commitment to aviation safety. Years later, as Aviation Manager at Apache Corp, I reached out to his company, AvSource, when we began pursuing IS-BAO certification. My goal wasn’t just compliance—it was to build the safest flight department possible. With Az’s guidance, we evolved from a “can-do” operation into a “can-do-it-safely” culture. Not everyone was on board at first—some questioned the value, others felt threatened. But by the time we achieved Stage III, there was no doubt: the process was not only worthwhile—it was essential. By the time I retired, the focus on safety was embedded in everything we did. Az played a key role in that transformation. If I were still leading the department, I’d continue bringing in AvSource for periodic mini-audits to maintain momentum. I’ve recommended Az to several operators and remain grateful for his deep dedication to improving every department he touches.

We began our journey to standardize and improve safety in 2014. Over the past eleven years, AvSource has been a cornerstone in guiding us on the journey of continual improvement. From our IS-BAO audits to independent ground ops audits, AvSource has been our trusted guide in the process and always invited us to a new level of achievement. We have become the IS-BAO Stage III operator we are today because of the expertise and accountability of the AvSource team.

I met Azmat Shah 15 years ago when he conducted our original Stage 1 Audit. Over the years, we have used Az for additional audits and have always found him fair and thorough. More importantly, though, Az has been our go-to source for advice on manuals, procedures, and implementations. His years of audit experience and background in business aviation have given him a wealth of perspective. His approach to problem-solving has served us well.

We worked with AvSource through all three stages of ISBAO certification. Prior to selecting AvSource to begin the process, I visited with three other companies offering this service. It became apparent that Az was not only willing to audit our operation for ISBAO certification but was also looking deeper to ensure cultural changes had been made to achieve the highest level of safety possible for our one-aircraft operation. Az was always prepared and was highly professional in all our dealings. During Stage 1, the auditor is required to interview the senior company official about the flight operation reports, too. In our case, it was the Chairman of the Board. I visited with the Chairman after the interview. He was thoroughly impressed with Az and his professionalism. The Chairman also stated that it was evident that Az was not only knowledgeable but had a true passion for aviation and wholeheartedly endorsed him to carry out our audit.
